Guide

Guide released in 1965. It is based on R.K Narayan's critically acclaimed novel,"The Guide". It is widely considered to be one of the masterpiece of the Indian film industry. This movie is proved to be memorable because of the performances of the actors. The music of this movie is memorable and composed by S.D Burman.

Plot

Director: Vijay Anand Actors: Dev Anand, Waheeda Rahman, Kishore Sahu, Leela Chitnis

The plot of this movie employ secret means. "The Guide" gently leads us through the story of a passionate soul, Raju Guide, imbued with mercenariness- ambitions, uncertainty, suspicious fear and jealousies- and his (Raju) journey towards final deliverance from sin. Plus point of this movie I s, the portrayal of his love with Rosie (Waheeda Rahman). The character of Rosie is bit grey-shaded. The chief person in the story is Raju (a fluent-talking guide).

Raju meets Rosie first when she is already married to a much older husband Marco ( Kishore Sahu) who is an archeologist. Maroc hires Raju as their guide while on a holiday. Marco is a much older husband of Rosie and very rude towards her. Soon, attraction develops between Raju and Rosie. Character of Rosie is a good dancer but her dancing skill is suppressed by Marco. On the other hand, Raju gives his love and support to her. He encourages to cultivate her dancing abilities. Rosie defies all the social norms by leaving her husband's house with Raju

Raju even defies his mother (Leela Chitnis) for his unconventional love.

With Raju's glib managerial skills, Rosie becomes a dancing star. But insecurity soon manifests itself. Raju takes to drinking and gambling. His fear of losing his love makes Raju forge a cheque in Rosie's name. She finds it hard to forgive him, and he is sentenced to prison. When he emerges from prison, he rejects his earlier life. He is mistaken as a holy man by some villagers and goes along with their belief. Circumstances make Raju to fast for 12 days to propitiate God for rain. At the end, Raju finds his final deliverance from sin through emotional salvation. Potrayal of Raju, played by Dev Anand is most famous and convincing. He won Filmfare Best Actor Award. Waheeda Rahman represented her character very effectively. She also won Filmfare Best Actress Award for this movie. Director Vijay Anand presented this complex subject with maturity and fair. S D Burman, who had drastically cut down his work in the early 1960s due to health problems, made a thumping reaffirmation of his enduring talent with Guide. Shailendra wrote deeply felt lyric in the song "Wahan kaun hai tera".
