Is "Slumdog Millionaire" popular in India? (Discussion)

albrecht saidMon, 22 Dec 2008 18:30:48 -0000 ( Link )

Hi everyone,

I live in Canada, but the most recent movie I’ve seen was a piece of North American and Indian cinema collaboration called “Slumdog Millionaire”. It’s based off of the novel “Q&A” by Vikas Swarup. It was a really great film – one of the better one’s I have seen this year and I highly recommend it to everyone.

I know that the film has received great reviews and awards from critics in North America, but I was wondering if it has also been playing in India and what the reviews are there. Perhaps there is a different view as the story was likely changed a lot and given a North American perspective…

Dan

Even I’d like to know how it’s being received there.

Even though it’s been nominated for so many awards and the great buzz about it, the urban audience must only know about it.

But since it refers to Mumbai slums, maybe the average, not-so-affluent people will also like to check it.

I do hope it does well, because I liked it quite a bit.

I guess I asked the question too early. I did a quick search and it appears that the movie has not yet been released in India!

It is scheduled for release in January 2009 though so you should be able to see it soon. Go see it and then let us know what you thought here on LearnHub!

Considering that the movie won 4 golden globe awards,Indians definitely have got a buzz of this movie.. movies like these ,though they’re about slums, are targeted at the multiplex audience..Am sure there will be many takers once it releases. Also, since the movie is in English that may limit the audience ..

Very cool. Thanks for the updates everyone.

I really enjoyed the movie and it has certainly been generating lots of buzz and award wins in North America- the interesting part is that it was targeted towards a hollywood audience and so we will see if it translates into a success in India.

Another question – do you have the Indian program “who wants to be a millionaire” on tv there as well or was that fiction in the movie?

The movie is set to release on January 23, 2009 in India. The movie has gained a lot of attention these days in India and as the film has gained Golden Globe for the music which is by A. R. Rahman, people are more curious about it. I hav already seen the english version of the film and the film is fantastatic. It really has got a lot of elements from the Mumbai slums and it is a down to earth film. So it is most likely that it will get a positive response in India too. The actors hav done a great job and I think the role of host of the game show was actually offered to Anil Kapoor only.

I recently saw the movie but was somewhat disappointed because of all the hype surrounding it. I felt that some of the the other bollywood movies are equally good and original (eg ‘Aamir’) but do not get the recognition abroad because of poor marketing. Also I felt that a lot of the things depicted (slums, begging cartels, Indian police methods) were unfortunately true – but the love and human side of India was not at all represented, which makes whole affair somewhat biased. To me India presents a case of extreme emotions both negative and positive. What made the movie click in the end was the message of ‘love and hope’.

By no means this movie is aimed at showing the chronic poverty of India. Many reviewers have criticized this movie for showing the only dirty reality of India instead of displaying all those swanky buildings, glittering malls. I think out of 10 Oscar nominations it would bag atleast 3 i.e. in cinematography, editing and for the song “JAI HO”!! It’s a perfect edge of seat thriller wrapped in ghostly realities of slums. I highly recommend it.

Actually, the film hasn’t got too much popularity in India yet. But , as it has won Oscars in 8 groups, I think it will attract a large number of viewers very soon.
